What is henna?
Henna is a plant, also known as Lawsonia inermis, which has been used for thousands of years to dye hair and for body art.  Its leaves are dried and crushed into a powder, which is then used for coloring.   Other plants used in the salon include indigo and cassia.

Who can use henna?
Anyone!  It's completely safe and natural and works on all hair textures and colors.  Your color results will depend on several factors, including starting color, porosity of hair and previous processing.

What are the benefits of using henna?
Pure henna will condition your hair and protect it from the sun.  it will make your hair stronger, thicker and give it shine.  Henna also has antifungal properties that can alleviate scalp issues such as dandruff and psoriasis.

What color is henna?  Does it only dye hair red?
The dye molecule in the henna leaf is a red-orange color.    Depending on your starting hair color, henna can give you a vibrant copper to a deep auburn.  When mixed with other plants such as indigo and cassia,  blonde and brown shades can be created as well.

Does henna cover gray hair?
Yes!  Henna covers gray hair beautifully!  Shiny, multifaceted, dimensional coverage.

Is henna permanent?
Yes!  Henna is a permanent hair color.  New hair growth will need to be touched up as usual.  Hair grows appx. 1/2 inch per month and the touch up time for henna is the same as traditional hair color, averaging every 4-6 weeks.

Will henna lighten hair?
No.  Henna, indigo and cassia do not have the ability to lighten hair.

Can you use henna on hair that was previously lightened with bleach or chemical hair color?
Yes, because henna and plant colors are pure, they will not react negatively on chemically processed hair.  In fact, they will improve the condition of your hair.

If I change my mind , can I dye my hair with chemical hair color after using henna?
Yes, you can use dye over previously henna colored hair when staying the same color or going darker.  This is the same as with traditional hair dyes as color does not remove color, only lighteners can achieve this.

Can I use lightener or bleach after using henna and plant dyes?
Yes, chemical lightener can lift henna hair color to a lighter shade, while expecting to have warm undertones.  For example, you can achieve stunning apricot highlights on auburn hair, but you will not be able to create a cool or platinum blonde until the henna grows out.
* If indigo is used with your henna to achieve a brunette color,  lightening is not advised as the indigo will not lift, which may result in a less then desirable muddy, blue/green highlight.

Is henna safe to use during pregnancy or chemotherapy?
The henna and plant dyes used in the salon are pure and often recommended by doctors instead of traditional hair color.  Always consult with your doctor first, based on your current needs.

How is the process of getting henna different from other hair color?  How long does it take to process?
Application of henna is similar to other colors, however it feels like a "mud mask" for your hair.  Hennaed hair is wrapped in  plastic and covered with a salon provided bandana.  Processing time for plant dyes can be anywhere from 2 - 6 hours.  3 hours is the average for most clients.   Since henna is completely natural, clients leave the salon to process where they can multitask, go shopping, stroll downtown Sandusky along the lake, kick up your heels at home with a good book, watch a movie or take a nap and easily rinse/shampoo at home.   Many clients find the properties of henna create a therapeutic, zen experience.

Stylists in the past have told me henna is bad.  Why is yours different?
Henna is not taught in cosmetology school, so any experience hair stylists may have had with henna are thru clients that have used boxed or liquid/cream henna from the store.  Readily available  "compound hennas" purchased at the stores very often contain metallic compounds that can melt or turn processed hair green.  These poor quality products  are not true henna, often contain chemicals, make the hair brittle and react poorly with ammonia hair dyes.
The henna and plant dyes used at The Green Leaf Salon are pure plant powders only.  They are independent lab tested for purity.

Why come to the salon to henna, can't I just do it at home?
The Green Leaf Salon uses only 100% pure henna and plant colors.  At the salon, we apply the experience and knowledge necessary to custom mix our plant dyes to give you the best possible results.

Do you only offer henna hair color in the salon?
No.  Since henna cannot lighten hair or offer all the capabilities of professional hair color, the salon also offers both Oway and O&M Hair Color.  These ammonia free hair color lines use the highest quality formulations to achieve professional results without the use of common salon toxins while utilizing active botanicals and pure essential oils in their formulations.
